The Farrelton Residence is located on 175 acres of a mix of farmland and forest. The home was built with an emphasis on both energy efficiency and natural products. The building was constructed using a pine timber frame with a 10 inch Larssen Truss wall system on the exterior. The Larssen system was filled with dense pack cellulose insulation for R values up to R45, and the ceiling insulated to R96. The home is heated via a hand built masonry stove with radiant floor heating in the basement. The exterior siding was milled locally and treated with an all-natural wood preservative. Special features include a cold storage room, an underground root cellar, and an earth loop HRV(heat recovery ventilator) pre-heater.
